LAUNCH OF HATUA RESEARCH CONSORTIUM: 16TH TO 17TH JULY 2018

HATUA, an acronym of Holistic Approach to Unravel Antibacterial Resistance in East Africa, is a consortium of research and academic Institutions from East Africa (Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences (CUHAS), Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), Makerere University (MUK), Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI), Kilimanjaro Clinical Research Institute (KCRI), NIMR-Mbeya Medical Research Centre (NIMR-MMRC), National Museum of Kenya, Technological University of Mombasa, Busitema University and Mbarara University) Have teamed up with Harvard University of the USA and University of St. Andrews and Sanger Genomics institute of the UK to address one of the challenging health issues of our millennium; Antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Led by the University of St. Andrews, the consortium will use the range of research approaches, from clinical, microbiological and geographical to modeling and social sciences, to identify, prioritize and understand the drivers of antibiotic resistance across different communities and environment in East Africa.
